Students will learn basic drawing and painting skills, supplemented by a review of art practices by a handful of great artists throughout history.  Most of the class time will be spent in guided drawing and painting practice.

Each class will begin with a look at artist(s) works to spark a discussion on such questions as: what is art? what different types of art are out there? what does it mean to draw from life versus from the imagination? what is a sketch and what is a finished piece? and how do artists work?

The discussion will be followed by short demonstrated lessons and practice time.

Lessons will cover:

     Drawing:
o   Pencil weight, shading
o   Perspective
o   Finding large shapes (simplification)
o   Using your pencil as a sighting tool

     Painting (watercolor and opaque gouache):
o   Color mixing
o   Noticing the darkest and lightest parts of the scene (value)
o   Creating watercolor washes, building up a painting in layers, softening edges, and       other paint-handling techniques

An overview of different tools and media used by graphic artists

Students will receive their own supplies including:
Watercolor Set
Brushes
Plastic palette
pencils

watercolor and bee paper sketchbooks
